550$ would be extremely hard to build anything decent

Why??
Hardwares here are cheap..

good hardware isn't

a good CPU is half that budget (i5/i7)

a good GPU is the other half

Also,

the site i used is not the cheapest possible, it is somewhere in the middle ground. So depending on what can be reused from another computer (PSU, HDD) you should be inside your budget.

@user Trotskygrad:
i lol'd how we created a post on the same time (exactly)

i doesn't need to buy new dvd-writer or reader, i already have one (samsung) and it's works fine!

Also, i made this list:
- ASROCk 970 Pro3
- AMD 6100FX (6 Core)
- ATI Radeon HD7770
- 4 GB RAM OR 8 GB
- 500GB HDD
- A simple ATX house
- CoolerMaster HyperTX

why are you getting a 6 core?

are you a mathematician or something?

most games struggle to utilize more than 2 cores.

For a gaming system i would recommend the following:

Proc: Intel Pentium G860 Boxed ( 75$)
Mother: Asrock B75-M-DGS (66 $)
ram: Corsair CMV4GX3M2A1333C9 ( 25 $)
HDD: Western Digital Blue 500 GB ( 70 $)
video: Club3D Radeon HD 7850 ( 200 $)
tower: Sharkoon MS140      ( 44 $)
power: Antec VP360P ( 40$)

not that much different from yours i guess.

Slightly worse CPU but much better graphics card though.
If the focus is less on games, i would buy a better CPU and a worse gphx.

@user gotya2: If you use a AMD CPU instead of an intel CPU, you can also get quite a decent CPU for that price [like this one]. You may need a new mainboard then too, though [like this one]. Also, the Harddrive is slightly overpriced. You can get quite a decent 1TB HDD starting at ~60€ [like this one].
Also, I would take the Corsair CMV8GX3M2A1333C9 as ram. Costs 10€ more, but has 8GB.

That will again have saved up to 20€ with partly even better specs.

Yeah, but with amd you can get an 8 core for $100, so why not

True that, i'm sitting at 520 at the moment so u can consider 8GB of ram, but it really depends on what u want.
If u really want a gaming system, focus should be on the graphics card. I would get something better than hd7770.

You really want to go for an Intel instead of the fx 6100 .

The article was written in jan 2012, the prices have changed a little bit, but the comparison still holds.

Buy SSD Harddrive. Yes, it costs more, but if you get it and install some OS on it, you won't regret it.

I just suggest you to buy some SSD for OS, and then another HDD for random crap you got.

because it'll perform worse at games than a similarly priced intel?

I'm not an intel fanboi but this entire "more cores = better" is rubbish for gaming applications.

An SSD would blow the budget out of the water, which in the OP's case would be a stupid decision.

More cores is better, not neccisarly for gaming (since most games use only a single core) but in general more cores is better, just like a higher clock frequency is better.

NOOOO! I have a 256GB SSD with my operating system and some programs and honestly, it's not that much better than a hard drive. Yes, windows 8 boots within seconds, but do you really want to spend so much more just to save 10 seconds???
